The last few days in Bali have a habit of slipping away. One afternoon you are making vague plans over coffee in Canggu; the next you are looking at flights and wondering where to go when your accommodation ends. Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok all make sense as possible next stops, but they offer very different experiences. The useful question is not simply which flight is cheapest. It is which city fits the rest of your trip, how easily you can reach it, and whether you really want to spend another day in transit.
Start with the airport, not the destination photo
Bali's main airport is I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, usually displayed as Denpasar (DPS) in flight searches. It is in the southern part of the island, not in the city of Ubud. If you are staying around Ubud, Amed or farther north, the journey to the airport deserves its own place in your plan. Road traffic near the southern resort areas can be slow, and a cheap early morning flight may become less attractive once you add a long taxi transfer and very little sleep.
Check whether the fare includes a cabin bag, a checked suitcase or neither. A budget flight can be good value, but the amount you actually pay is the ticket plus baggage, seat options you genuinely need and ground transport. Look at the arrival airport as carefully as the departure airport. That matters particularly in a city such as Bangkok, where two different airports serve international flights.
Option one: Singapore for a short, convenient city stop
Singapore is a useful contrast after time on Bali. The trains are easy to navigate, the streets feel organized, and a short visit can be satisfying without an ambitious sightseeing schedule. You might spend one afternoon around Marina Bay, explore the food stalls of a hawker centre the next day, and then move on to another country.
Flights from DPS to Singapore Changi (SIN) are commonly available, although schedules and fares change. Changi is well connected to the city by public transport. A hotel near an MRT station can make a two-night visit much more comfortable than an inconvenient bargain at the edge of town. Singapore is often more expensive than Bali for accommodation, so compare the cost of the entire stop, not just the flight.
Singapore is a good choice if you want a reliable transport hub, a compact city experience or convenient onward international connections. It may be less appealing if you are trying to stretch a very small daily budget. And remember: Changi Airport and the Jewel complex are not entirely the same space; some attractions require entering Singapore rather than remaining in international transit.
Option two: Kuala Lumpur if you want flexibility
Kuala Lumpur gives you a mix of large-city energy, food from several communities, malls, markets and easy access to other parts of Malaysia. Flights from Bali arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), which is a substantial distance from central Kuala Lumpur. Factor in the airport rail or road transfer before deciding what time you will actually reach your hotel.
For a first visit, areas around Bukit Bintang or convenient rail stations can work well. Spend time eating, visit the neighborhoods that interest you and leave room for an unplanned evening. If you have more than a few days, Malaysia also gives you several logical next steps. You can travel north to Penang by ETS train and ferry or consider other domestic routes depending on the season and your interests.
Kuala Lumpur is often worth investigating if you want onward flight choices without spending too much on the stop itself. Still, compare different airlines' baggage rules. Two visually identical search results can have quite different total prices.
Option three: Bangkok for another big adventure
Bangkok may be the most energetic transition of the three. The food scene is huge, different neighborhoods reward wandering, and you can use the city as a base before heading north or to other parts of Thailand. It also opens up connections toward Vietnam, Cambodia and other destinations.
But check the airport code. Suvarnabhumi is BKK; Don Mueang is DMK. They are separate airports on different sides of the metropolitan area. If you are planning another flight shortly after arriving, do not assume the next departure uses the same airport just because the itinerary says Bangkok.
For travelers staying in the city, choose accommodation based on where you actually want to spend time. Bangkok traffic can turn a short-looking road journey into a lengthy one. If you are arriving late, a straightforward hotel transfer and a relaxed first morning are better than scheduling an early excursion.
Which onward route would we choose?
If your next priority is a short city break and efficient onward connections, start by checking Singapore. If you want room to explore Malaysia by rail or spend more time in an affordable large city, compare Kuala Lumpur. If you are keen to begin a longer mainland Southeast Asia trip, Bangkok may make the most sense.
There is no single winner. Imagine that the Singapore flight costs slightly more but leaves at a comfortable hour and lands near a quick transport connection. That may be better than an exceptionally cheap flight to Bangkok requiring extra baggage fees and an overnight airport wait. Think in complete days and actual expenses, not screenshots of headline fares.
Domestic flights are not international departures
A flight from Bali to Jakarta or another Indonesian city does not take you out of Indonesia. That sounds obvious, but it matters if you are organizing documents around an intended international exit. Check the route, the departure airport and the destination country separately. Airlines and border authorities determine which documents they accept; you should consult the relevant official guidance for your nationality and circumstances rather than assuming every situation is identical.
If you are still deciding between Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok but need to document an intended flight route where a temporary reservation is appropriate, Avionward provides a real temporary itinerary with passenger details, a date and a booking reference. It is not a paid airline ticket and cannot be used to board an aircraft. A particular airline or flight number is not guaranteed, and the reservation's active period is separate from the intended flight date. For destination-specific information, see the Indonesia guide.
Before leaving Bali
Leave enough time to reach DPS from your accommodation, check the full baggage price and choose an arrival airport that fits your next few days. Three useful destinations are only a starting point; the right one is the place you actually want to explore. A well-planned departure from Bali can feel like the first morning of a new trip rather than the stressful end of the previous one.
