Indonesia & Bali Onward Ticket Requirements: e-VoA and Visa on Arrival
Flying one-way to Bali? Indonesia’s immigration guidance for Visa on Arrival and e-VoA lists a return ticket or onward ticket to another country among the required documents.

Bali is one of the world’s classic one-way-ticket destinations. Travelers arrive for surfing, long trips through Southeast Asia, remote work or an itinerary they have not fully decided yet. But Bali does not have its own immigration system: Indonesian national immigration rules apply.
For travelers using Indonesia’s Visa on Arrival or electronic Visa on Arrival, official immigration guidance lists a return ticket or an onward ticket to another country among the required documents.
The key phrase is “to another country”
That wording matters.
A Denpasar–Jakarta flight may be useful for your holiday, but it does not demonstrate that you will leave Indonesia. An onward segment should cross the Indonesian border.
Examples of a coherent plan might include:
- Denpasar to Singapore;
- Jakarta to Kuala Lumpur;
- Bali to Australia;
- a return trip to your country of origin.
The next destination also needs to be somewhere you can legally enter or transit. A flight reservation is not a solution if the next country would refuse you for a separate visa or transit reason.
The airline may check before Indonesian immigration
The first check can happen at the departure airport. Airline staff routinely verify destination-entry documents because transporting a passenger who does not meet the destination’s conditions can cause operational and financial problems for the carrier.
Indonesian immigration can then inspect your documents on arrival. If you apply for an e-VoA before travel, travel information can also form part of the application process.
This is why a traveler can be asked about onward travel before ever reaching Bali.
Choose the exit date after choosing the visa route
Do not start with a random onward date.
First determine the Indonesian entry permission you will actually use. Then choose an onward date consistent with that permission and your real travel plan.
Social-media advice often mixes different visa products. A post that says “you get 30 days” or “you can stay 60 days” may be describing a different category from the one available to your passport.
What should you check on the itinerary?
Before you travel, confirm:
- the passenger name matches the passport;
- the route leaves Indonesia;
- the departure date fits the stay permission;
- the next destination is legally reachable;
- the booking is still valid at the moment it may be checked.
If the itinerary changes, update your actual travel plan rather than relying on a document that no longer reflects what you intend to do.
Can an onward reservation be used for Indonesia?
Indonesia’s official VoA/e-VoA wording refers to a return ticket or an onward ticket to another country. A real, verifiable onward reservation gives airline or immigration staff the core itinerary details they need to review: passenger, international route, travel date and booking reference.
Avionward provides that real reservation record for travelers who need proof of a planned departure. If your airline or application flow specifically asks for proof of payment or a purchased ticket, follow that specific instruction; otherwise keep the reservation active and accessible when you travel.
A better one-way Bali checklist
- Confirm your passport’s current Indonesian entry route.
- Check passport-validity requirements.
- If using e-VoA/VoA, review the latest official immigration instructions.
- Choose the country you genuinely expect to visit after Indonesia.
- Have your international departure evidence ready before airline check-in.
- Check the next country’s entry and transit rules as well.
- Re-check official Indonesian immigration information shortly before departure.

Bottom line
For VoA/e-VoA travel, Indonesia’s published immigration material expects a return ticket or onward ticket to another country. A one-way trip to Bali can still be perfectly legitimate, but the outbound part of the plan should be solved before the airport rather than after an agent asks for it.
