Taiwan asks visitors using its visa-exemption scheme for confirmed onward or return travel. A flight leaving Taiwan for another country can satisfy the requirement; it does not have to return you to your starting point. The departure date must fit the stay granted to your passport.
What Taiwan actually requires
The official visa-exempt entry rules call for a confirmed return air or sea ticket, or onward transport to the next destination together with the necessary visa for that destination, and a confirmed seat reservation for departure. Read the Bureau of Consular Affairs' published conditions before travel.
A traveler continuing from Taipei to Osaka should be ready to present the flight out of Taiwan and the documents required to enter Japan. The itinerary is not restricted to a return journey home. By contrast, a domestic flight to another Taiwanese city does not show an international departure.
The document should display the passenger name, operating carrier, departure airport, destination and travel date. Keep the booking reference accessible if the airline needs to inspect the reservation record. Our onward ticket vs return ticket guide explains the distinction.
Your passport determines the departure deadline
Taiwan's visa-exemption periods are not uniform. Its Bureau of Consular Affairs lists up to 90 days for passport holders from many eligible countries, including the United States, Spain, Canada and Japan; 30 days for eligible Malaysian and Singaporean visitors; and 14 days for travelers using the trial exemption for Thailand, Brunei and the Philippines.
The permitted stay is calculated from the day after arrival. Choose the outbound flight date with that calculation in mind, particularly if your journey crosses midnight or involves a late-night departure.
In July 2026, Taiwan extended the 14-day trial arrangement for Thailand, Brunei and the Philippines through 31 July 2027. Visitors from those countries also have additional requirements concerning accommodation information, a contact in Taiwan and travel funds.
Flying into Taipei and onward to a third country
Taipei Taoyuan Airport is a common starting point for multi-country trips. Some visitors spend a week in Taiwan before continuing to Hong Kong, Japan or South Korea. Others leave from Kaohsiung after traveling south.
Select the departure airport based on where the trip will end, not automatically the airport where it began. Check the international schedule and whether the next country will admit you with your passport and visa status. Our guide to choosing an onward destination covers these route decisions.
Timing the reservation for an airline document check
A traveler may decide on a destination weeks before check-in but only need to present the booking near departure. Avionward provides genuine temporary flight reservations with a verifiable PNR and a PDF itinerary delivered by email, typically in about two minutes. Standard reservations have a guaranteed 48-hour active period, and Activate Later lets customers arrange the timing in advance.
Taiwan specifically describes confirmed tickets and a confirmed departure seat reservation in its visa-exempt rules, so the record presented for travel must meet those conditions. If you intend to fly on the exact itinerary, Avionward's support team can also assist with a request to purchase the actual flight shown.
The arrival card is a separate part of the journey
Taiwan uses an online Taiwan Arrival Card, or TWAC, for applicable foreign visitors. The official government portal accepts submissions within seven days before arrival, without a fee.
The form asks for passport, contact, travel and accommodation details. It is separate from the onward flight evidence: one records your arrival information, while the other documents the planned departure. Match the outbound date to your visa-exempt stay, keep the departure details with your inbound itinerary and complete TWAC before flying.
