If you are applying for a South African visitor visa, you can prepare the flight itinerary before buying the airfare. South Africa's embassy in Washington asks for proof of a round-trip itinerary or reservation and advises applicants not to purchase air tickets until the visa has been granted.
Start with the correct consulate and visa category
South Africa exempts certain passports from short-stay visitor visas. For instance, qualifying Canadian citizens visiting for tourism or specified business activities for 90 days or less do not need a visitor visa, according to the South African mission in Ottawa.
For applicants who do need a visa, instructions depend on the office responsible for the application. The paperwork published in Washington, Ottawa and Mexico City is not identical. Begin with the mission serving your place of application, then build the itinerary around its checklist.
What should the flight reservation show?
The Washington visitor visa checklist asks for the planned round trip. The document needs to account for entry into South Africa and departure after the proposed visit, with travel dates matching the application.
Ottawa's application requirements ask applicants to bring a printed, detailed flight itinerary, not a sheet containing airport codes alone. Transit hours matter because the consulate uses the itinerary to review the proposed journey.
If the route connects through another country, include each international sector. A traveler who begins in Johannesburg and ends in Cape Town can depart from Cape Town when that reflects the real plan. The South African Embassy in Mexico also lists arrival, applicable domestic flights and departure in its itinerary guidance.
Match the itinerary to the rest of the application
Suppose the proposed stay runs from 8 to 22 December. The flight dates should support those travel dates, and the hotel booking or host invitation should account for the period in between.
An applicant arriving at O. R. Tambo International Airport, spending part of the trip in Johannesburg and continuing to Cape Town should describe that itinerary consistently throughout the file. The reservation establishes the dates and routing against which the consulate can review the other documents.
Booking for the application, flying after approval
A visa application often begins long before the intended travel date. The embassy's advice against purchasing tickets before approval lets applicants document their plans without committing to the final fare.
Avionward provides genuine temporary flight reservations with verifiable PNR references and PDF itineraries sent by email, normally in about two minutes. Round-trip reservations are available. Standard reservations have a 48-hour guaranteed active period, and Activate Later lets applicants choose a more suitable creation date ahead of submission.
The active life of the reservation and the future flight dates are different: an itinerary for a December journey can be prepared for an October appointment. For help structuring both sectors, read the return ticket for visa guide.
A separate route for some Mexican travelers
The South African Embassy in Mexico publishes information about a digital Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for eligible Mexican ordinary-passport holders arriving through O. R. Tambo, Cape Town or Lanseria airports.
This is distinct from a traditional visitor visa application. Mexican travelers using the ETA process should follow its own instructions. For conventional consular applicants, the embassy's itinerary checklist remains relevant. After permission to travel is issued, the visitor can arrange the airfare; customers interested in the exact flight shown can contact Avionward about buying it.
