You want to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Penang and find a flight that takes about an hour. It seems obvious until you discover that the train goes north to Butterworth, where a short ferry puts you close to George Town's historic streets. The bus is another alternative, sometimes cheaper and with different arrival terminals. Which should you choose?
We'd compare the entire journey from your Kuala Lumpur accommodation to the hotel in Penang. A one-hour flight isn't a one-hour travel day, and arriving on Penang Island doesn't necessarily mean arriving close to George Town.
Understand Penang before booking
Penang is a state with an island and mainland territory. George Town, the historic capital most visitors want to explore, is on the island. Butterworth is on the mainland across the Penang Strait. The Penang International Airport (PEN) is on the island but south of George Town.
The arrival location depends on transport. The ETS train terminates at Butterworth. Express buses may stop at Penang Sentral on the mainland or Sungai Nibong on the island. Flights arrive at PEN. Check your hotel's location before declaring one route fastest.
The ETS train: from KL Sentral to Butterworth
Malaysia's Electric Train Service links Kuala Lumpur's KL Sentral transport hub with Butterworth. Depending on the service and timetable, the journey usually takes roughly three and a half to four hours or somewhat longer. Seats are reserved and the carriages are air-conditioned.
For travelers staying near KL Sentral, it can be a comfortable alternative to flying. You avoid the longer transfer to Kuala Lumpur International Airport and much of the time involved in checking in and collecting luggage. The journey itself is relaxed: a chance to read, listen to music and watch the scenery change.
Book using the official KTMB website or KITS system, selecting KL Sentral as the origin and Butterworth as the destination. Check the exact departure, railway station and ticket category. Popular trains can sell out around weekends and holidays. We would also pay attention to the arrival time because the ferry is not an all-night service.
The ferry from Butterworth to George Town
Butterworth's railway station connects on foot toward Penang Sentral and the ferry terminal. The usual sequence is Butterworth station, Penang Sentral, Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal, a short crossing and arrival at Raja Tun Uda Terminal in George Town.
The water crossing takes around fifteen minutes, but you need additional time for walking, buying a ticket and waiting for departure. The Penang Port Commission has published an adult one-way fare of RM2, subject to change. Look up current times and payment arrangements on the official ferry information page.
The published timetable has included morning departures from Butterworth starting around 6:30 AM and late services up to approximately 11 PM. Don't assume these details are permanent; verify the latest schedule before booking a train arriving late at night.
When you reach the George Town side, many old-town hotels are reasonably close, but not all. A brief car ride may be easier than dragging a heavy suitcase along hot streets.
Taking the bus from Kuala Lumpur
Express buses operate from several Kuala Lumpur terminals, including Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS), depending on the service. Journey times are often advertised around four to six hours, although road traffic and rest stops can extend the trip.
Check the arrival terminal carefully. Penang Sentral is on the mainland, giving access to the ferry. Sungai Nibong is on Penang Island but south of central George Town, so you may still need a road transfer. Other services may have additional stops, so don't rely on a vague destination labeled only Penang.
We'd consider the bus when the fare is significantly better than the train or its departure time suits us more. But we'd avoid a road journey scheduled to arrive only shortly before an expensive onward flight. Traffic does not respect a tight connection.
Flying from KUL or Subang
Flights from the Kuala Lumpur area to Penang (PEN) take about an hour in the air. But you need to reach the airport, complete airport formalities and then travel from PEN to your hotel.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport uses KUL and is outside the center. Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang uses SZB and hosts some domestic routes. These are separate airports. Compare the actual departure airport, airline and luggage allowance rather than assuming all Kuala Lumpur flights leave from the same place.
Penang Airport is roughly sixteen kilometers from George Town. The road transfer can vary considerably with traffic. Public buses, taxis and e-hailing services may be available according to your arrival time and accommodation. If you're already at KUL on a suitable connection or staying near the airport in Penang, flying may be particularly convenient.
Which journey is fastest from hotel to hotel?
Imagine you're staying near KL Sentral and your next hotel is in George Town's historic quarter. A train of around four hours, plus the ferry and a short local transfer, can be competitive with a flight once you add transport to KUL, early airport arrival and the journey from PEN into town.
Now imagine you've just landed at KUL from overseas and your Penang hotel is in the south of the island. A domestic flight may save several unnecessary ground transfers. The same route can have a different best answer depending on where the traveler starts and finishes.
For budgeting, add the main ticket, local transfers, luggage charges and any overnight accommodation caused by inconvenient timings. Bus fares may be inexpensive; train prices vary by service; flights occasionally have promotions. A comparison based on only the headline fare can be misleading.
Is the ferry worth taking for the experience?
We think so, especially if you love arriving in a city by water. It's a short crossing, but the views over the strait and the approach to George Town give the journey a lovely finish. After checking in, spend time wandering the historic shophouses, visiting the clan jetties and finding a first plate of char kway teow or assam laksa. We'd allow at least two or three nights to enjoy Penang without making the visit another rushed transport stop.
Can you leave Malaysia directly from Penang?
Penang International Airport has international services, so depending on your next destination, you may not need to return to Kuala Lumpur. Compare the actual routes and schedules. A domestic train or bus journey from Kuala Lumpur to Penang isn't a departure from Malaysia.
If you're still choosing an international travel date and a temporary reservation is appropriate for documentation, Avionward can prepare a real short-term itinerary with passenger data, destination, date and booking reference. That is not a paid ticket and cannot be used for boarding. The active reservation period is different from the future departure date. See Avionward's destination guides for additional information.
Our choice
For a hotel in central Kuala Lumpur followed by one in George Town, we'd start by checking ETS train tickets and the ferry timetable. For the smallest budget, compare buses and their exact terminals. If you're already at an airport or staying in southern Penang, compare flights. There isn't a universal winner, only a route that works better for where your day actually begins and ends.
