Can You Hold a British Airways Flight for a Visa? The 72-Hour Option Explained
British Airways has a genuine way to hold selected flights without paying the full airfare immediately. Its “Hold your flight price” option can keep an eligible itinerary and fare available for up to 72 hours in exchange for a per-person deposit. That sounds ideal when you need a flight reservation for a visa application, but the useful details are in the conditions: not every departure country qualifies, the hold is normally available only well ahead of travel, and the document you receive is a booking hold rather than a promise that a visa office will accept it. Here is how to decide whether it fits your application before you spend money.

What British Airways actually offers
The airline's official Hold your flight price page describes a straightforward process. Search for an eligible British Airways or Iberia flight on ba.com, choose the hold option if it appears beside the price, pay the deposit and receive an email linking to the held booking. You can return to the reservation through that email or Manage My Booking during the hold period.
British Airways currently advertises a deposit of £5 per person for short-haul flights and £10 per person for long-haul flights, with equivalent amounts displayed in some other currencies. If you pay for the whole booking within the hold period, the deposit is refunded separately. The published terms allow up to 21 days after full payment for that refund. If you let the hold expire without purchasing the flight, the deposit is not returned.
That last point matters. The deposit is not a general cancellation insurance policy. It buys a limited window to make a decision about a specific itinerary. You should regard the amount as a potential cost when comparing options.
First check whether your departure country is eligible
This is the part many generic “reserve a flight without paying” guides miss. British Airways explicitly excludes certain origins from its 72-hour hold offer. The current published list includes India, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Argentina, Dominican Republic and Egypt, alongside several Caribbean countries.
So if you are applying for a visa in India and intend to depart from Delhi, you should not assume a British Airways hold will appear simply because the airline flies your route. The same applies to a planned departure from Mexico City or Lagos. The rule concerns the origin of the itinerary, not merely the nationality on your passport or the country where you happen to be browsing the website.
The official conditions also specify selected BA- and Iberia-operated flights booked on ba.com, with the booking made at least 21 days before intended travel. Avios redemption bookings and flight-plus-hotel or flight-plus-car packages are excluded. If the hold option is missing from the checkout, it is not something you can force by changing the language of the page.
How a held booking fits into a visa application
There are two separate questions: can you create a held reservation? and does the office handling your application request that type of document? The airline answers the first. Your consulate or visa application centre answers the second.
Prepare a return flight reservation that matches the visa checklist, travel dates and supporting documents without confusing an itinerary with a paid ticket.
Some visa checklists ask for a flight reservation or proposed itinerary. Others use different wording, or require supporting evidence for an entire multi-country journey. Read the instructions issued for your nationality, visa category and application location. If they ask for a reservation, compare the details in the held-booking email with the requested fields. Do not assume that the mere appearance of a booking reference settles every documentation question.
A reservation should help the reviewer understand your actual proposed journey. If the departure date, passenger names or airports disagree with the application, choosing a famous airline does not fix the mismatch.
The 72 hours are not the date of your flight
Suppose your appointment is Tuesday at 10 a.m., and your planned flight is six weeks later. A booking held on Friday morning may have expired before you reach the appointment. The departure date can still be six weeks away; the hold itself has its own clock.
British Airways allows a hold for up to 72 hours, not a blanket 72-hour guarantee on every route. Check the precise expiry shown during the booking process and in the confirmation. If your visa documents are uploaded on Monday but reviewed on Wednesday, the relevant moment may not be obvious. Follow the submission instructions rather than guessing when an officer will inspect a record.
The practical sequence is to choose your route first, confirm the official checklist, then arrange the reservation for the document-submission window. If you are still waiting for the appointment date, do the research now and postpone creating the short-lived hold.
If your appointment moves after you have paid the deposit, remember that BA's terms do not let you change the route, dates or passenger mix on a held booking. You may need to let that hold lapse and start a new one. The airline does allow certain passenger-name changes, but that is not a substitute for selecting the correct travelers from the beginning.
Is the BA deposit cheaper than a temporary flight reservation?
It depends on the itinerary and what you need the document to do. Consider three situations:
Your situation
What to compare
You genuinely intend to buy that exact BA flight
The hold protects the fare while you decide; paying in full within the window triggers the deposit refund.
You need an itinerary for a visa appointment but are not ready to choose the final airline
Compare the deposit, eligible routes, hold expiry and document fields against a dedicated temporary reservation.
You depart from an excluded origin, such as India or Mexico
The BA hold may not be offered; check another airline's official hold facility or a reservation service suited to the required document.
A dedicated temporary flight reservation is a different purchase. It is designed to provide a passenger-specific itinerary for a limited documentation window, often with a booking reference and PDF. It does not lock in a BA fare for later purchase. Conversely, a BA fare hold is principally a way to protect an eligible airfare while you decide whether to buy it.
If you compare costs, calculate the total for all passengers. A £10 long-haul BA deposit is per person. For four travelers, that is £40 held at checkout. If the family buys the flights within the hold period, BA says the deposits are refunded separately; if not, the fee is lost. Compare that outcome with the full quoted price of the alternative reservation, rather than only looking at the smallest number in a headline.
The details to inspect before saving the confirmation
Once a hold is created, open the email and the booking link while you still have time to correct a problem. Check the passenger names, flight numbers, origin and destination airports, dates and local departure times. Confirm whether the itinerary is a return journey or separate one-way flights. If a family is traveling together, make sure each person is actually included.
A record locator is useful for retrieving a booking. It is not the same as a flight number, payment reference or issued e-ticket number. If those labels are confusing, the guide to booking references and PNRs explains how to read them. For the BA hold itself, use the airline's official Manage My Booking link rather than an unrelated lookup website.
What if you need the same flights after the hold expires?
If your visa appointment has been rescheduled, first decide whether the original travel dates still make sense. If they do, you can look for a fresh eligible booking closer to the new appointment. If the trip dates have changed, rebuild the itinerary so the reservation, hotels and application describe the same trip. The useful document is the current one, not a collection of expired confirmations.
For a wider explanation of how short booking windows work, see the guide to onward ticket validity. It covers the distinction between a reservation's active period and the later flight date without tying the advice to a particular airline.
A sensible way to choose
Use the BA hold when the airline, route and dates are genuinely attractive and the hold is available for your origin. It is particularly useful when you may go on to buy those exact flights and want time to decide. If your priority is a specific visa-document deadline, work backward from the appointment, check the document requested and compare the actual confirmation you will receive—not just the advertised 72 hours.
The strongest itinerary is one you can explain in a sentence: these are the travelers, these are the planned flights, and these dates match the journey. Once those details are right, choosing between a fare hold and a temporary reservation becomes a much simpler decision.
