Can an Onward Ticket Use a Different Airline?
An onward flight can be on a different airline and a separate booking. Because the inbound carrier may not see that reservation automatically, keep the second itinerary and its booking reference ready to show during check-in.
Why a separate reservation may need to be shown
Airlines can usually see the sectors issued inside their own booking, but a flight held under another carrier and booking reference may not appear on the same screen. The traveler supplies that missing part of the journey by presenting the onward itinerary.
Place the inbound and onward bookings in chronological order so the airport agent can follow the arrival, stay and international departure without searching through unrelated emails.
Check airport, baggage and transit details separately
A separate booking does not automatically protect the second flight if the first one is delayed. If the journey includes a self-transfer, leave enough time for immigration, baggage collection, terminal changes and a new check-in.
Confirm whether the connection stays at one airport. A same-city transfer between different airports changes the timing and may require entry into the transit country.
What to keep available at check-in
Save the onward itinerary offline and keep the PNR with the passenger surname. Make sure the route leaves the destination country within the planned stay.
If the airline asks about the separate booking, show the document directly and explain the sequence of flights in the same order shown on the itinerary.
Frequently asked questions
Must the inbound and onward flights share one PNR?
No. Separate airlines or bookings can have different PNRs; keep both itineraries available.
Will the first airline see my separate onward flight?
Not always. Present the separate reservation when it does not appear in the carrier's booking view.
Does a separate ticket protect a missed connection?
Usually not automatically. Allow enough transfer time and review the conditions of each booking.
